Recording yourself or using generated narration?

Choose based on what you want to keep. If it’s the way you tell one favorite story, record it yourself. If you want new stories narrated in your voice without reading every one into a microphone, look at generated narration.

A recording of you reading

  • You read the whole story into a recorder.
  • The recording keeps your pauses, laughter and choice of words.
  • Each new reading needs another recording.
  • You can replay the saved audio using a compatible player.

Generated family narration

  • You enroll your voice so software can generate narration.
  • You review a story, then request audio in that voice.
  • The result may sound different from how you would read it.
  • Consent, deletion options and new-recording costs matter when choosing an app.

How does it work in Goodnight From Me?

  1. The adult enrolls their own voice. Setup includes consent, a recording, verification and a sound check. Another person cannot do this on their behalf. Children cannot enroll a voice.
  2. You review the story. Read the personalized draft and approve it before choosing a narrator. Check names, events and anything your child might find upsetting.
  3. The app prepares the narration. Choose the enrolled voice and check the cost shown in the app. Audio generation takes time, so set it up before you need it at bedtime.
  4. You listen to the result. Play it yourself first to check how it sounds. You can replay an exact saved recording without spending another credit.

Family voices are optional. Moonlight and Storybook studio narrators are also available. Free Classic Tales include their own studio recordings and don’t require voice setup.

What should I check before choosing a voice app?

  • Who is allowed to enroll? Look for the voice owner’s consent and a clear verification process.
  • Can I review the words? Make sure you can read a generated story before your child hears it.
  • Can I withdraw permission? Find the process for revoking consent and deleting voice data. In Goodnight From Me, these options are available in the app.
  • What costs extra? Check setup, new narration, replay and membership terms separately. Goodnight From Me shows the cost before you continue; our FAQ explains story credits.
  • Can I listen without internet? Check the saved audio on the device you’ll use. Goodnight From Me supports offline listening to saved recordings; creating stories and new narration requires a connection.

Our Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab) explains how Goodnight From Me handles data. These questions can also help you read another app’s policy without assuming every service works the same way.

Can I prepare a story for a night I’m away?

Prepare and review the story in advance, listen to the finished narration and confirm it is available on the device that will be used. Leave time to fix a mispronounced name or choose a different narrator. A live call or a recording of you reading may be the better choice if you want a particular message in your own words.
